healthy eating for families on the goWe all want to have a healthy family, but developing healthy eating habits at home is easier said than done with today’s busy lifestyle. The key is to plan ahead, by using a meal planner for each week you can go to the store just once rather than making numerous trips to pick up one or two things. Then, prepare meals ahead of time and freeze them, cutting out the prep time on those busy evenings during the week. This can also help the family have some quality time, as you can all do prep work for the week together. For instance, if you do your meal planning and shopping on Sunday, you can chop any vegetables that you will need in your meals, preassemble casseroles’ or lasagna that evening. Spending that one night a week doing this makes week nights more enjoyable and less stressful, still resulting in a healthy meal for your family. We are all drawn to those frozen food isles with the pre-made meals you just heat up, but those are expensive and full of preservatives. For those fun weekend activities outdoors, pack a healthy picnic this saves money, encourages healthy activities and you’re not stopping for fast food in between stops. If you have to eat out while running the kids from soccer or dance, choose wisely such as going to the fresh sub shop or deli rather than the burger joint.

With childhood obesity on the rise, it is important for us to start good habits at home. The choices our children get at school are unfortunately, not healthy ones most of the time. The best choice is to have your child take their lunch to school. It can be fun for them to make their own lunch by getting creative which can be as simple as cutting the sandwich into fun shapes with cookie cutters. The more involved your children are in the choices for their meals, the more it encourages them to continue these habits as they grow up. There are multiple websites with meal ideas and many are specifically for healthy kid inspired meals. Doing a search on the internet for healthy meals for a family with children or for meal planners will give you a multitude of ideas to get started on your healthier lifestyle. While raising a healthy family on the go is not an easy task, there are tips out there to help out those busy moms and dads!
