Healthy Family Activities: A Key To Intergenerational Good Health

Doing healthy family activities can do a lot for the overall health of individual family members and can help keep the family together. The old saying,’ The family that prays together stays together’ can be slightly altered to say ‘The family that plays together stays together’ and it would still be true. Seeing parents involved in healthy activities positively affects children and the choices they make in life. Staying fit is a concept many of today’s youth are unfamiliar with. Participating in activities promoting health from an early age can help children become healthy for life. Playing together positively affects older people as well. Getting involved in a game of catch with the grandkids can help grandparents get in the exercise older people desperately need.
Having fun as a family is important. The interaction helps the family members to get to know each other better. How does dad, mom, sister or brother act when the chips are down or when they lose? Engaging in healthy family activities gives children the answers to these questions and provides them with models for proper behavior. Positive family group activities also draw family closer together. They learn to enjoy each other’s company and have fun together.
Children learn what they live. If children see their parents taking time to be with them, engaging in healthy activities and having a good time doing it, they are more likely to engage similar activities themselves as they grow older. They in turn pass this on to their own children and healthy group activity becomes a family tradition.
Children today do not get enough exercise. This has led to the rise in obesity and other diseases. Parents can change this pattern by encouraging family members to get together and ride bikes, walk in the park, go on hikes or spend the day swimming. Seeing our parents and other family members enjoying healthy outdoor activities can motivate children to participate.
Older people also need to get exercise. If they do not use their muscles they begin to stiffen up and atrophy. Effective blood flow and consistent deep breathing are important for good health. Encouraging our parents and grandparents to play together can do a lot to ward off a host of cardiovascular diseases and lead to a longer, healthier happier life.
All these rewards and more can be yours if you take the time to engage in healthy family activities!
