The whole process of trying to lose some weight when you are a few pounds above your ideal weight can be easy or difficult, depending upon many factors. When you have one or more teenagers in the house who are overweight, there are even more factors to bear in mind when putting together a plan of action to have a healthy family. Providing teens with the means to lose some weight is one way of getting the process going, so here are some weight loss tips for teens that you can use to help things along.

The first thing you have to contend with is the fact that generally, teens are going through a phase in their growth that means their hormone levels are going haywire, which will lead to different moods at different times. One moment they can be receptive to new ideas and willing to give them a try, while in a heartbeat they can change to being resistant to new ideas and totally anti any suggestions you care to make for their own good! The trick is to catch them in the right mood and put the ideas when they are most likely to accept them.

Often, the best way of getting anyone and that includes teens to accept ideas about losing weight is to put those ideas into the best light possible and be positive about them. A little investigative resourcefulness can go a long way here. If you can discover if there is someone they like at school that is into sports, you could gently nudge your computer game addicted teens to joining in with their more healthy activities instead.

Here are some great, yet simple tips to help teens to stop gaining weight and to lose it instead:

  • If you provide their meals, home cooked with fresh ingredients is best and make sure the portions are not too large.
  • Avoid serving up processed foods or heavily sugar laden desserts.
  • Try and get them to eat at the dining room table together as a family and in a calm atmosphere. That means no arguing over dinner!
  • Do not have a TV that is visible or within earshot as they eat as this is a distraction.
  • Do not let them listen to fast, upbeat music while they eat as this makes them eat faster causing less efficient digestion, leading to more fat storage.
  • Do suggest they clean their teeth earlier in the evening as this can stop them wanting to eat snacks late at night.

These simple tips for weight loss will go a long way to helping your teens to improve their health and control their weight. Getting them out into the fresh air with friends to play some sport oriented games in a local park or sports center will improve their fitness levels too.
