Between the kids’ short attention span and busy parents, it can be difficult to keep the kids entertained at home. Soon complaints of boredom start echoing through the house despite rooms full of toys. If you often find yourself in this situation, it may be time to jazz up your entertainment options. For the busy parent, here are some quick home entertainment ideas.
Crafts
Crafts, if done right, can occupy your child for hours. Set up a designated mess area and let your kids play with material they normally don’t get to use. Try things like paper mache, glitter or food. If they need some direction, have them create a holiday decoration or a gift for a friend. Having a craft box you can pull out with various materials your kids can use is a good way to quickly set up a craft area.
New Movies
If your kids like movies but do not watch them very often, having a supply of movies your kids have not seen tucked away somewhere where you can pull them out as a surprise is another easy way to entertain them. Make sure you are familiar with the movies, so you know they are appropriate, and you may consider using a movie editing service, so you do not have to watch the movie with the kids.
Have Quiet Time
If there are certain times of day when your kids start to get bored and cranky, consider turning that hour into quiet time every day. During that time, kids can take a nap, watch a movie or read a book. The only rule is they have to be quiet. The early afternoon is the best time to do this, and then end it with a snack, so your kids will be rested, fed and ready to play again.
Send them outside
If your kids start getting restless, send them out the door. Keep an eye on them, of course, but leave them alone long enough for them to come up with something to do on their own. More than likely, they will quickly start a game of tag or start playing on the play set.
Have a Play Date
While the idea of having another child over can sound stressful, kids often get a lot more ideas of things to do when they have a friend, so call up the neighbors. More than likely they will return the favor.
